WordPress 2.8

When you speak about blogs and blogging; your talking WordPress as a platform more than likely. With the introduction of 2.8, WordPress once again is showing why it is the domainting platform. The new Version named “Baker”, so named for the vocalist and trumpeter “Chet Baker” has improvements to themes, widgets, taxonomies, and overall speed, as well as fixing over 790 bugs.

You now have the option of browsing the entire theme directory and installing a theme with one click from the “Dashboard”. There is also a “Featured Filter” which is just too cool. Say you have a “beaches” blog. More than likely the theme will be white or close to it for sand. You can now search for a theme that is white has two columns and a right sidebar, with fixed width and a “Seasonal” look.

You can now customize your Header on the fly if needed. Most, I think will not. This is kinda a non-starter. Most will want a graphics program to build the theme header or “logo.png”

The Widgets Interface had been completely redesigned. You can now drag and drop your choices instead of clicking the “add” buttons.

The “Theme Files” editor now looks more like a real html editor with numbered rows and colors. The same holds true for the “Plug-Ins” editor.

The Time Zone nightmare is finally over. It was always a challenge for me to get the old system just right. You can now choose “America” and choose a city in your time zone and Voila !

These are the most important changes that anyone will readily notice. The full list can be found here at this link: codex.wordpress.org.

From the stand point of an install, as long as the choosen theme and the plug-ins function, your in business. Remember always install your plug-ins one at a time when working with a new version of wordpress that you have no experience with and check to see if it is working properly.

Happy Blogging !!!
