Hard Coding Your Blog

Shuttle Launch Warning

I started out a couple of weeks ago to do a quick lesson on coding and that post has taken on a life of its own. I’m kinda crossing over here in what I want to do as a Blogger …… which is to run Blogging Extreme.com while managing Bloggers Market. After all you can’t really “Learn How To Make Money Blogging” until you understand, well ……… how to Blog, call it a catch 22.

This week I’m going to share with you a little of what will be forthcoming in my new E-Book, “The Bloggers Market Guide To HTML For Bloggers”.

In this post I’m going to focus on the Bloggers post. When I started out I thought that providing images for my Blog would be a pretty good way to provide my readers with a little extra something. What I have come to find out is that the images that I post here at Bloggers Market get indexed within Google …… sometimes at the very top. Pretty cool ……. I can use all the help I can get.

As you no doubt have learned by now I actually provide an image for the homepage and an image for the inside of the post every time I post. For the first I just provide the path to the template and upload. For the image in the post I actually hard code that image into the post. As you have probably learned by now you can use the “Set featured image” in WordPress that will basically set the image you use on your homepage within your post. This option called “Insert into post” is not a very good one. The image is restricted in size …. somewhat, and the image will not nest properly within the post if inserted at the top. Best idea, hard code the thing. Here’s how, first don’t try to size an image for the inside of your post with your coding. Go ahead and put your image through your photo editor and size it there and then upload it to a folder titled “images” within your home directory. Why WordPress buries the images on the dark side of the moon I have no idea. What’s worse they want to sequence the folders by number instead of name.

When you size your images don’t try to squeeze the dimensions. Just get the width right and the height will take care of itself. My template size is 588px for my width. I like a full size image for my post. Below is the code I use: ( you can left click inside the box and copy the code if you so desire)

If you post three times a week you will have this down to memory in about three weeks as second nature. It is really pretty basic. The image attribute, the path to your image, the alt attribute and the title attribute if you need it. I forego the title attribute most of the time unless the image needs some explanation for the interest of the reader. The title attribute will display the text “Kitten Being A Kitten” when you mouse over the image with the code I have used above. Don’t forego the alt attribute as this will cause the code to fail validation. What that means is that Google will frown upon you. And don’t leave the alt attribute blank either as the code below displays. While the code will validate if you do this, it shows really poor form ( something we will get into next week) The alt attribute provides alternative information for an image if a user for some reason cannot view it (because of slow connection, an error in the src attribute, or if the user uses a screen reader).

Most of you that read this will be totally dismayed with what you see here. I understand that. Some of the Newbies will find it useful but for the most part, most will wonder why I display code that a 5-year-old would know. That’s just the point! Simple code design!!! By the time we finish I’ll spin your head right off your shoulders. You will see some really complex HTML designs that I will re-write here that will leave you with a feeling of “how cool is that” when you see the finished code. For example: the code box that you see displayed twice above started out in three languages and 30 lines of code. I have re-written it in one language, (XHTML) and with just one line of code. It took about 5 hours to do it. But I got it down to nothing but the running gear. I’ve seen plenty of code boxes out there, but nothing like what I have. Looks pretty cool huh ? I’ll show you how ……… soon. By the time we finish you may not be a “Pro Blogger” but I can guarantee you will be a “Power Blogger. See you next week.

( EDITORS NOTE: Since writing this post I have completed an HTML solution for inserting your images with the “Media Library”. You can read a clear explanation on the issue by following the provided link above. Below you will see an example of the finished code as well as a small piece that I use to finish the styling.

The Bloggers Recession – Special Feature

Recession In The Newspapers

I’m trying to recover from a fall as all who follow know. In the mean time I have some decisions to make come the first of the month to try to get this Blog back on track for the newbies, which this Blog is aimed at. But for the next week, I continue to knock around the edges of the Blogosphere and offer scattered thoughts. Trust me I’d love to work. I just don’t feel up to it at the moment.

When thinking about the current economic climate that the Blogger must survive and even thrive in, well ……. it’s not really a beginners subject. It really should be over at Blogging Extreme.com, however I just have no material to go with here at Bloggers Market, so I will post here.

I got to thinking last night about all the Bloggers I know and whether they have any earnings to show for their efforts. Especially within the “Make Money Blogging” niche. I’ll have to admit that I’m a hard case at the moment and while I do make a living Online, it’s not a good one by any stretch of the imagination and I don’t make it Blogging. My problem is that my Blogging gets in the way. I do love it so!

I see a lot of good intentioned Bloggers who are in the Blogging niche trying to break through and it leaves me wondering. With broken code and scattered thoughts, I have to wonder what they are doing and why are they doing it.

I actually know what it is that I am doing here. I have a great deal of experience with computers and was making money with computers before I got into Blogging. So for me I was going to take this niche by storm. You want to know about Blogging and the Internet, see me!!! I am in fact a Pro-Blogger in the truest sense of the word. Wrong!

After 18 months I’m broken. How can this be. I’ll admit that I have things that I need to learn, but I get it. I truly do. There is nothing I can’t do when it comes to Blogging. I could use some help in SEO and I could use some pointers in marketing, but I adapt fast, real fast. I can be slow to institute change though.

Bottom Line: I make no money despite 18 Blogs. Not good! But how about the others. I know some killer Blogs that can’t possibly be making any money.

Slowly but surely the truth is coming out, as the really good Bloggers are coming out and admitting that earning any kind of sustainable income is a bitch, despite a smokin’ hot Blog.

It’s a fact that 97 percent of the population live on something like $30,000.00 or less a year and you can bet that figure is the same Online as off. That leaves only about 3 percent of all Blogs that make any kind of good income. I understand that my figures my be a bit foggy when it comes to the Internet. But despite anything I’m not making $30,000.00 Online. What’s up with that?

That means that 97 percent of all the positive …… you can make big money Online claims, are a joke! Worse yet, the ones who are saying it aren’t making any money either. Man, what a system.

With the current recession there are just not enough people coming into the Internet who are willing to part with a few dollars either out of fear or lack. The money is just not there.

Like I said at the beginning I’m a hard case. I’m here to stay, in the final analysis (at least in my case) I have no where else to go. I’m just not sure whether I’m going to be Blogging or repairing computers. As for the rest of you ………. Good Luck, you’re going to need it!

I, for the most part try to re-frame from the political side of things and try to keep my views to myself. I try to stay on point here at Bloggers Market when it comes to “Learn How To Make Money Blogging”. After all, people do make money Online and you need to know how to do the tech stuff before you can begin profiting. This is indeed what I try to accomplish here at Bloggers Market.

I now turn this debate over to you. I would love to here from each of you in the comments section, if for no other reason than to gather some inspiration for the coming months ahead while we all deal with this Bloggers Recession.

Now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to deal with the Twitter mess created by the 17-year-old Australian kid that now directs my marketing efforts to Japanese porn sites. Jez …….. if things weren’t tough enough for a Blogger!

That First Product – Lesson 21

Now comes that all important first product. First you have to build it, than you have to launch and advertise it, than you have to sell it. As I have said in several posts in this series, you need to start on your first E-Book as soon as is practically possible. Once you reach this lesson, you should have already started and hopefully are close to finishing.

You can make money with your products in a variety of ways. You can do membership forums, you can do membership clubs, videos, DVD’s, CD’s, E-Books, and E-Manuals. Before you paste you’re smiling face all over the Internet and make a monkey out of yourself with videos and the like, it might be a good idea to start with E-Books and E-Manuals. It’s the safer bet, if you are just starting out. You can of course, start gathering all the equipment and software for your future video needs. And practicing wouldn’t hurt either. Make sure you watch carefully and observe what the best Bloggers are doing with their videos.

Now that you have your first product written; time to put the product together. The first thing you are going to have to do, is to find an appropriate cover for your E-Book. This takes artwork and the software to deal with the images. So if you are doing an E-Book on Fireworks, than you need to start looking for an “open source” “royalty free” image that is really cool. Once you have that image, you need to start working with that image in something like, brace yourself, photoshop. I know, if you could afford photoshop you wouldn’t be selling E-Books. But there are other alternatives like “Gimp” which is free of charge.

All of the images of E-Books you see on my sites, I have built with Gimp. Problem is there is a learning curve. A pretty bad one too. The instruction manual that you can download with the software is next to useless. Do yourself a favor and download the software and purchase my book on “Gimp E-Book Design Instructions” over at Blogging Extreme.com and go to work. You’ll thank me for it.
