Following The Broken Link

I’m in the final stages of polishing Bloggers Market; have been for the past couple of weeks. It just took me six months! Like anyone else; I don’t know maybe just me …….. I saved the best for last. Everything is where it should be except for Bloggers Toolbox.

Bloggers Toolbox started as a collection of tools, better expressed as a collection of websites where you could fine-tune your Blog. It was a killer project. I’m actually running a PHP Script inside of a page, which if you have understanding you would know that PHP does not or will not natively nest within a WordPress post or page ( neither will Java for that matter … what’s-up with that ? ).
Oh joy ………..

Taking A Fresh Look At Things

As I took another look at the remaining work needing to be done to finish the project, which entailed writing a script that would insert your Blogs URL into all of the sites that you chose to visit, I started noticing that a lot had changed since I last worked on the project, which was about 8 months ago. Had it not been for my template blowing-up, I would have finished the project long before now.

To establish the proper links, I first installed my URL and then ran tests to make sure everything worked. Now the only thing left to do is to make sure when you place your URL in the top of the page and press the enter button, it will process your information instead of Bloggers Market. That’s kinda where I left things at the end of last year.

The Only Constant Is Change

As I prepared to write the script, I once again wanted to check the integrity of the links involved and so I started to run them down one by one. Goodness I could hardly recognize my own work. I couldn’t even recognize why I wanted to take my readers to the sites that I was now looking at.

Well one or two wouldn’t be so bad. However, almost all of the links had changed significantly or were just out-right broken over the past several months. The tool as I had it envisioned was not what I was looking at ….. in the least. All these cool tools and the owners just closed-up shop one night and never bothered to come back. Leaving me with a mess.

That’s one of the things I really hate about the Internet is that so many cool sites come and go. I thought at one time it was a problem that was unique to Blogging.

It Might Be A Good Idea To Check For Broken Links

Now I’m sure that you know by now …… even if you are a newbie that you need to check your outbound links to make sure that everything is just so. I do this about once every couple of weeks. It’s quick when I check on the homepage, it’s a little bit more of a challenge when I have to check the posts. And yes, I do check the links within my posts well after I have written the post. There is even a cool little Plug-in that will do the work for you if you so desire. However, be forewarned this plug-in is not for the faint of heart. It can give false positives and disables your Blog while in process mode.

At the end of the day, all of the broken links and changes at the sites within the Bloggers Toolbox may well have spelled an end to this project. I’m going to take a very close look at this in the next few weeks and by the time you read this, I might very well have removed the project all together as I just don’t have the time to keep-up the page and I don’t need this making me look bad and frustrating my readers.

We live and learn I guess. And it was such a cool idea ……..

That has happened to me as well Jeffrey. I’ve been working on a site, had all the links in place, tested them as I went along and then once I hit publish for some reason some of them weren’t working. I mean come on! They worked when I first checked them so what’s up with that!

It’s frustrating but I think that is just part of having to do these things online. At least that’s the way I care to look at this. You have no choice but to go back and fix them all.

We definitely live and learn is right! Hope it all ended up working out well. Now, relax and enjoy your weekend okay!

      Hi Adrienne,
I can’t relax and enjoy the weekend. I really wish I could. However today I finished-up on the tribute banner that runs in my header here, to the “Blogger Of The Year”. Any guesses ? I do this every year and this year the banner will run from November 24th thru December 17th. Last years banner was in tribute to “Brandon Connell”.

I also finished all of the art-work for the two-week display for “”. Which includes a series of post banners with interior landing-pages that will run at the top of my posts starting on November 26th thru December thru December 24th. Time to Cowboy Up!!!

And I’ve also finished the art-work for the two-week official launch of ““, which includes a banner ad, with an interior landing-page.

      For my next trick ……………..

Dang, you sound like me. I try to do the work on the weekends I’m not able to do during the week. Of course I haven’t gotten that much accomplished today but was way behind on my commenting the past week so have been playing catch up today. But I got some other things done as well and will get back to writing that report I’m working in.

Wow, Blogger of the Year! Any guesses? Not a one, there are WAY too many awesome bloggers out there my friend. To just choose one would be so hard. I have a feeling you won’t disappoint though.

Will wait for that next trick!

  2. Hi Jeffrey,
I agree with you. It’s definitely a must to be constantly checking for broken links. It’s very frustrating when I come across a topic that I’m interested in only to find an error when I click on that link.
It’s nice to have a plug-in that will do the work and I hope I come across several options that I can choose from.
Thanks for the reminder. Have a nice day!

Fixing broken links is very important because having a lot of broken links will negatively affect our SEO process as well as affect the user experience. I am using broken link checker plugin for all my blogs and it makes my work very easier. Without that plugin I may become mad because I have to monitor the broken links all the time, but this little plugin do all those hectic tasks with out any problem.

Hi Rojish, thanks for dropping by today!

Keep this in mind. It is always a good idea to come behind the Plug-ins work and check things out. Plug-in are pretty cool but they can’t think for you and links are a really gray area. Looking at the Plug-ins log will show you that.

Good friends that have changed names need not be deleted, however you will have to repair those links yourself.

On a personal note: I took a look at your site … pretty cool. I see you build Blogs, however you have no examples of your work ???

    Hey Pal!

I installed the Broken Link plugin earlier this year and I was shocked at how many broken links I had.

I still get an email once a week with a broken link or two. Most of the broken links are from comments I left on blogs that know longer exist.

    Take care!

      Hi Rick,
Where have you been? I’m releasing my “Goodbye to Rick Byrd” we wish you well, farewell post that is due to be released October 3, 2012 as I have seen no new content on your site. I’m just assuming that you have packed-up your affiliate offers and moved on to happier hunting grounds ………. talk about broken links !!!

  6. Rick Byrd says:

I know, I know. I have been very busy training people at my full-time job before I leave on September 30.

I have been so tired lately. I actually took today off so I could check out the blogs of my friends to see what has been going on.

I’m also having a problem with the free screen capture software I was using so I have been testing out a few other free programs. I might have to break down and buy Camtasia at some point.

As for affiliate marketing I need to get ready for the Christmas season as I am too late for the Halloween rush.

Take care and I will keep in touch.
